100 Self Portraits
When an art form is a way you choose to express yourself it can be daunting to use it to document yourself.
Feeling a variety of different emotions in front of the camera is normal, those emotions get put under a microscope when you are a photographer. Used to being on the other side of the camera documenting everything you choose to see through the lens.
COVID felt like the time to be introspective so that’s what I did. I took a long look inside and these images gave me the pathway. I was inspired by Jennifer Moher who opened a Facebook group immediately after lockdown and encouraged us to make self-portraits. She told us her story and so we began. There was a core few of us that posted daily for over 60 days. Jennifer kept up the project for herself for 100+ days.
A few days after the lockdown Jennifer also offered her ‘Refresh’ workshop at 60% off, so I jumped on it.
It’s a beautifully curated multi-chapter look at how she shoots weddings with her then partner Hugh. I was so inspired, still am so inspired that I find myself feeling an internal struggle from the inspiration because I can no longer shoot the way I was. She has moved me to move forward with how I see through the lens. How I choose to document, how I choose my inspiration.
I see now the way I want to compose, with the self-portraits I was beginning that process because each one is composed of thought and expression during this time. I made prints of them as well. Often spreading them on the floor to gain inspiration to move forward.
Thank you, Jennifer, you did indeed ‘Refresh’ my process and make me feel like its more than welcome to shoot the way I want too, in fact without that I am not being true to me. So here’s to plugging my nose and jumping into being inspired and refreshed.
I wrote this original blog post in May shortly after I finished this project, Jennifer reached out to me today and asked if she could include 7 of my images in a book she is going to create for a local, not for profit. I said of course and quickly gave my information. I can’t wait to get my hands on a copy.

What surprised me the most is the general condition of homeless in Vanc. Unlike polish smelly, dissolved in alcohol men or New York's half-zombified heroinists, folks in Vanc supprise you with how tidy and clean they keep themselves. (Usually inhabiting tents in less popular parks.) Or their manners - trying to earn a honest loonie by holding the door for you when you go to Horton's for a cup of coffee.

I spent a few days in the Yukon following a story for Bloomberg on the Trump family fortune. Donald Trump’s grandfather Fredrik Trump, earned his families wealth through opening a restaurant/hotel/brothel during the Klondike Gold Rush in the late 1800′s.

“We work with a landscaping company: door-to-door sales. It was hard at first, but it becomes second nature once you’ve been doing it for a while. It’s good. It’s easy, not so hard anymore. The job made me more outgoing. I got a go-getter kind of mentality, thinking that anything is possible. You just need to go after whatever you want.”
“What’s your goal this time in Vancouver?”
“Just make a bunch of money, man.” [laughing]

@RealDonaldTrump - Does the FakeNews #HamOnt (does it really matter if it is #Austin, #Vancouver, #Toronto or #Halifax?) press understand that we are in the business of expanding Pax Americana & Project For A New American Century & No Secret Service Left Behind in every city worldwide, but especially now that #NAFTA debate is on we are back & operating immediately 36 hours a day to full #USMCRecruiting strength & extending thoughts and prayers to all those #HoustonStrong with tears in their eyes. But for Americans everywhere, we turn those years & tears of exhaustion into seeds of #RuthlessAggression and hope for the future. 🏁 News broken here on @CNN - America will not be intimidated...and neither will we, the American people, by a press hell bent on showing misery every second of the ratings day. In 2017, we work to build people up - we are in this together - so I will continue to work in service knowing next target acquired for WhiteHouse.gov will be this @HamiltonSpectator Metroland Media BS who don't know that disrespecting Sheriff Clarke and the #The6ix #MurderMusic (icons of African American & Canadian African culture) sets in the same editorial column is recipe for a return to Mario & the old T H & B crews. I'm fixing to get these teeth sharpened and dine on their gristly souls as a way of reinforcing - @packers Enforcer style - that we can't and won't be stopped... 🏁 #BlackPower, #BlackPrepper & a sweet @WizKhalifa collectors loot crate full of respect for the worlds highest ranking protector of #BlackWater (#WisconsinSuitDoFitHim) and black water war librarian. Also, looks like there's no editorial approval by the photographer in this editorial which reveals horns of plenty.about the state of #photojournalism (ain't it so @allelbows @UFC @WWE) 🏁 many of us are gangstas, #dopeman journalists & protectors or some combination of above but if you fuck with us, things won't go well for you. THIS IS NOT A THREAT... We are going to destroy all these anti-Americans as I live and breathe eternal sunbeams with @JamaicanArmy, #PlanetMarley & the continued march to end the oppression of #black people & fight for #HumanRights 🏁 HELLO AGAIN B.WOODWARD) (at Beverly Swamp)

VANCOUVER’S OTHER HOUSING CRISIS
In 2016 I spend some time photographing Randy van Eyk for Hakai Magazine aboard his home Tuesday Sunrise. Randy is a crusader for the rights of liveaboard boaters who find themselves in a housing crisis of their own in Vancouver. More recently - the United Church Observer re-licensed my photos and did their own story on the subject.
Here are links to the online versions of the original stories - both worth a read:
“Vancouver’s Other Housing Crisis” by Laura Tretheway in Hakai Magazine
“Vancouver liveaboards fight for their way of life” by Diane Selkirk

Turning a page.
This is work I created a while ago, when I first had the tingling to do editorial photography. These images were inside of me waiting to come out for a long time and some that are similar have found their way into every shoot of mine since then. I just haven’t been posting them.
I have been afraid of change but also so inspired by it too, kind of torn in two and then murals became something for me too. I have always had aspirations of seeing my work big. At first, I was thinking that it would be really big portraits printed and made into light boxes and exhibited at a gallery. That dream is still in the cue, for now, I have found a way to make that dream come true with murals.
I had the opportunity to create a few so far and am so looking forward to making more www.freeadmission.ca
I invite you to come along on this journey with me, as my world turns and the butterflies churn.

I spent a week up in Northern B.C for Bloomberg with reporter Natalie Obiko Pearson. We covered the LNG development in the area of Northern B.C and Haida Gwaii. There is a strong resistance to LNG development as a majority of areas that are proposed for construction sit on First Nations territory.
